A Promise Renewed…

It’s a typical late working night. I was burying my head deep in the pile of works, Kelvin came into my office and asked in a begging tone, Ms Wong, it’s almost 8 o’clock, what time do you intend to leave the office?

I don’t know darling, look at my desk, I have a million things to do before I can go back, maybe I’d need to sleep here tonight… Suppliers had been giving me a lot of troubles recently, some I really don’t know what to do…

The out of nowhere, he held this little black box in his hand and with his quick fingers, he opened the cute little box. And there it is, my engagement ring!! All shiny, freshly polished and embedded in a new setting!

I nearly screamed out loud! It’s so beautiful!

How about this? He asked and I can see a happy grin on his face.

Thank you darling! I didn’t know they will get it fixed so quickly! And he was gently taking the ring out from its casing and slipped it on my ring finger. The size is perfect I said, staring at the beautiful little stone that sparkles like never before. I was (and still am) feeling happy 🙂

On his proposal, Kelvin presented me a generous D colour and I have been wearing this ring since we engaged in 2008 (Engagement Story HERE). And as years went by, the platinum ring lost its luster and turned slightly yellowish. One day when he saw me washing my yellowish ring and blew dry it, he suggested we should get it reset onto a new ring. We have been searching high and low for a trustworthy jeweller that will be able to tailor made the design that I want. And many a times, jewel house only accept the diamonds sold from their shops, and not from other jeweller. As this engagement ring was being bought in Australia, it makes no sense to fly all the way back just to get it fixed. And just when we felt a little disappointed about it, Kelvin found this jeweller JannPaul in Singapore that provides such service.

I wanted a classic solitaire 6 claw setting with smaller band width, something safe for the round brilliant cut diamond as I will be wearing it everyday of my life. My previous one was also a 6 claw design, but it allows very little light to reflect due to its enclosed bottom. Therefore the diamond can’t release its brightness to the fullest. It may be the safest setting in the world I told Kelvin the next day he proposed. I supposed he specially ordered it to be made this way to symbolize his unmoving love (maybe?)

So I told the jeweller I wanted a elegant setting that allows more of the diamond to be seen from every angle and is able to make the diamond reflects more lights and thus enhance the shines. The jeweller carefully take note of what I want and drafted it up as he carefully studied my diamond. When we finally came to conclude the meeting, he measured my ring size and told me that the next time I see it, it will sparkles like I’ve never seen it before.

After 3 weeks of remodeling, tonight I finally got to see it again. It’s glorious… The fire in the diamond is like the constant flame of love we share. On our way home that night, I was thinking about the night he proposed, his promises to love, to take care of me and always put me in front of himself. I remembered the night when he slipped the ring onto my ring finger and commited himself to me. I remembered the intensity of happiness and love I felt in my heart and that I just couldn’t stop staring at for the next several weeks. That was the time when suddenly, I was walking around with a sparkly little indication of my new status as a fiancée.

I am his wife for almost 3 years now and so much has changed since then. I am obviously older, plump, less glamorous and we live a less romantic life than before. We have conflicts and ups and downs. But none of this matters, the moment when he showed me this ring, I knew in my heart that the love from him has never change.

And I really treasure this ring, just as I really treasure his love for me. It sparkles when I type and clinks when I drink. It reminds me that I’m loved when I’m having a bad day.

They say nothing puts a smile on a woman’s faster than when she sees a diamond. To me, the most important thing is that the ring truly represent the love, honor, and commitment we share for many years to come 🙂

If you are given a chance to reset your engagement ring, would you choose a different design?

Share with me!

Thank you so much for reading and wishing you a romantic weekend!

XOXO Eryn ❤
